Fostering a Startup and Innovation Ecosystem

New ideas come from everywhere, and entrepreneurs do not have to be in Silicon Valley to be the next Google or Facebook. In fact, a growing number of thriving tech companies got their start elsewhere Kakao, Spotify, and Waze, just to name a few. That said, Silicon Valley is home to the most prolific, thriving startup ecosystem in the world. We are seeing communities take lessons learned from Silicon Valley and apply them to their local context to develop ecosystems in other places like Tel Aviv, London, and New York City1. Plenty of existing research and case studies provide advice for entrepreneurs2 and have shown that there are a few common ingredients that help to foster successful ecosystems. In this paper, we will explore five of these ingredients in detail: talent, density, culture, capital, and regulatory environment.
