What makes a leader? It’s something that we at Accounting and Business have asked ourselves many times in preparing this special leadership edition. There are many popular quotes on leadership but I think this one from Albert Einstein sums it up: ‘The leader is one who, out of the clutter, brings simplicity… out of discord, harmony…and out of difficulty, opportunity.’ Events on the global political stage show that leadership can take many forms and still be effective. In business, the qualities that leadership requires include courage, ambition, passion, empathy, charisma – and humility. Not everyone has these qualities in spades but the ability to see the bigger picture and, through that, contribute value is a skill that is vital to today’s professional accountants.
