CBIZ Small Business Employment Index fell 1% in September

September usually isn't a great month to try to find a job at a small company, and last month more than held to that pattern, according to the latest CBIZ Small Business Employment Index. The September index from Independence-based business services firm CBIZ Inc. (NYSE: CBZ), which tracks hiring trends among more than 3,700 companies nationwide that have 300 employees or fewer, showed a 1% decrease in hiring from August. CBIZ said in a news release that small businesses typically shed seasonal workers "in advance of having a lean labor pool in the fall months." But this year's 1% drop "was a worse mark than the previous five September periods," said Philip Noftsinger, executive vice president of CBIZ Employee Benefits, which compiles the index
